Active Ingredients
Alpha-hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
Ingredient Type: Chemical exfoliant
AKA: Glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid, citric acid, malic acid, tartaric acid
Purpose: There are two main types of acids used in skincare: Beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) and alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs). AHAs work to chemically exfoliate the outermost layer of skin, AKA shed dead cells to reveal healthier, brighter skin.
Benefits:
- Exfoliates to reveal healthier skin
- Evens out and brightens skin tone.
- Smoothes and firms skin texture
- Minimizes the look of pores
- Can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
Best for: All skin types, however tweens and younger teens (under 15) should use cautiously, ideally in low concentrations (2-5%) and in gentle, well-formulated products like mild cleansers or moisturizers.
Why the caution? Tween and teen skin is often more sensitive due to hormonal changes and a thinner skin barrier. High-potency AHAs (above 5-10%) or frequent use can cause irritation, redness, or dryness, especially for sensitive or acne-prone skin.
How to use: Start with a product containing low-dose lactic acid (gentler than glycolic) once or twice a week, and always follow with moisturizer and daily SPF 30+ (AHAs increase sun sensitivity). Patch-test first to check for reactions.
When to use: AHAs are great for addressing uneven texture, mild acne scars, or dullness, but they’re not necessary for everyone. If breakouts or oiliness are the main concern, salicylic acid is often a better choice for young skin.
Doesn't mix well with: Retinol and other retinoids.
Benzoyl Peroxide
Ingredient Type: Oxidizing agent, antibacterial
AKA: benzoperoxide, dibenzoyl peroxideThe basics:Considered one of the most effective, tried and true choices for clearing up breakouts, benzoyl peroxide works to destroy acne-causing bacteria on the skin. It also helps unclog pores and gently exfoliates dead cells.Benefits:Treats and prevents acne
Keeps pores clear
Improves the look of acne scars
